Shortly after his 3rd birthday his parents moved back to Edinburgh where Alan spent his early formative years being educated at Loretto before going to Edinburgh Art College.

After graduation in 1952, Alan's ability as a portrait painter soon came to the fore and thereafter he travelled extensively throughout Australia, Canada, South America and Norway, working on commissions for such people as the late Lord Beaverbook and the Head of the Bank of Colombia.
